Flat Tire? Here’s What You Need to Know

Flub, flub, flub.

The unmistakable sound and feel of a flat tire.

Ugh.

It’s no fun, but you can just grab a can of Fix-a-Flat and be on your way, right?

Not so fast.

This seemingly “easy” solution may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Here’s what you need to know about the right way to handle a flat tire.

A temporary fix

A can of Fix-a-Flat will work for a small hole or a slow leak around the rim – but only for a little while.

The can contains a liquid that gets injected into the tire with some added air. The slimy liquid hardens, hopefully covering the hole or leak.

A solution like this was never meant to be a permanent fix.

Plus, it doesn’t work for every situation. If there’s a slice in the sidewall or you have other extensive damage, Fix-a-Flat isn’t the solution for you.

The real deal

Your best bet when you experience the flub, flub, flub of a flat tire is to get to a safe spot off the road right away.

Put the spare tire on your vehicle and get it to the trusted mechanic at your dealership who can assess the situation for you.

Take the damaged tire with you so the technician can decide if it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.
