Safe Driving Tips in a World of Distractions [UPDATED]

Everyone can use a reminder to follow safe driving practices.

But with texting, listening to music, munching on a snack -- and “games” like Pokemon Go -- there’s always a distraction to contend with.

Driving while engaging in any of these activities is highly dangerous.

But there’s always one or two -- or a few -- individuals willing to take the risk, and who think, It’ll never happen to me!

Real risks

Here’s a scary example to drive the point home.

Recently, a driver playing Pokemon Go crashed, causing damage to the vehicle -- but thankfully, not to any people.

It wasn’t a tragic situation, but it very well could have been.

Eyes on the road

Don’t take any chances. Drivers, put your phones down and the Pokemon Go game away when you’re behind the wheel.

It’s not just drivers who have to be judicious when behind the wheel.

Pedestrians are also taking chances, noses down, looking at their screens, on the hunt for Pokemon points, updating their Facebook status, or adding their pictures to Instagram.

When you’re driving, be extra alert for pedestrians who are too engrossed in their phones to pay attention to where they’re going.

Follow these tips

Here are some other safe driving tips to follow:

  • Make sure passengers and children do not disrupt you, the driver. One small bump of the arm could cause you to abruptly steer into oncoming traffic or go off the road. All passengers should be buckled and never climbing around the car.
  • Avoid using your cell phone. It’s hugely distracting.
  • Don’t drive if you’re tired or under the influence of medication that makes you groggy.
  • Change lanes with caution. Always use your turning signal and be sure to check your blind spot.
  • If it’s deer season, be extra cautious during dawn and dusk, key times when deer are on the move.

Be safe on the road, and above all else, don’t be tempted to rack up points on Pokemon Go.

Wait until you’ve turned off your vehicle, and then release your inner Pokemon, show off those new baby pics, or your nature photography.
